MORPHOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES RELATED TO DEVELOPMENTAL PATTERN OF LILY PLANTLETS REGENERATED FROM SCALES IN VITRO

Abstract:
The morphological differences in relation to the developmental pattern of plantlets regenerated from scales of six lily genotypes on MS solid medium containing 90 g/l sucrose are presented. The plantlets regenerated in vitro had a dormancy status irrespective of their morphology and genotypes and were categorized into three groups: (1) microscale-form lilies (Oriental lily, 'Stargazer' and L. lancifolium), (2) leafy scale-form lilies (L. x elegans, 'Connecticut King' and L. x formolongi, 'BS Super'), and (3) both organs, microscale and leafy scale-form lilies (L. longiflorum, 'Hinomoto' and 'Georgia'). In group I lilies, anthocyanin contents were the highest and the 23 and 29 kD proteins in mitochondria were remarkable, but the specific activities of peroxidase and fumarase were the lowest compared to group II and III lilies. Cell number in leafy scale is larger than that of scales in the same group III lilies.
