Abstract:
To determine the optimum bulb vernalization of new selected lines of Asiatic hybrid lilies (Lilium x elegans Thunb.), bulbs were stored for 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 weeks at 5°C, potted, and forced in a 15°C (night) greenhouse.
The time required for shoot emergence and flowering decreased as bulb vernalization duration increased.
More than four weeks of cold treatment were required for early shoot emergence and flowering, 100% flowering, and an increased number of flowers.
Plant height, petal length, and flower diameter did not show a clear relationship with bulb vernalization, although the response varied according to the selected lines.
Sequential temperature treatment given to bulbs did not accelerate flowering nor increase the number of flowers as compared to bulbs that received same amount of vernalization.
The response of Asiatic hybrid lilies to bulb vernalization differs from that of the Easter lily, and newly selected hybrids must be evaluated to find an optimum bulb vernalization treatment.
