ISHS Acta Horticulturae 414: International Symposium on the Genus Lilium

CLASSIFICATION OF LILIES USING RANDOM AMPLIFIED POLYMORPHIC DNA (RAPD) ANALYSIS

Authors:   J. Lee, P. Lee, Y. Lim, E. Shin, Mark S. Roh
Abstract:
This study was conducted to develop a classification system of Lilium using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Three primers successfully produced distinctive polymorphisms among fifteen L. x elegans Asiatic hybrids, five L. x speciosum Oriental hybrids, L. x formolongi, L. concolor, and L. lancifolium. Fifty-one RAPD markers were analyzed by the unweighted pair group method, arithmetic average (UPGMA) cluster analysis. The analysis indicated that all Asiatic hybrids were grouped within SI of 0.56, and could be separated from other Lilium species. These results suggest that analysis of RAPD bands may be used to estimate the genetic background of lily cultivars.
