ISHS Acta Horticulturae 414: International Symposium on the Genus Lilium

IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF THE INTERSPECIFIC HYBRID BETWEEN LILIUM LONGIFLORUM AND L. CALLOSUM

Authors:   Mark S. Roh, Robert J. Griesbach, K. C. Gross, M. Line
Abstract:
Lilium longiflorum Thunb. produces white flowers and is widely grown as both a potted plant and a cut flower. L. callosum produces small red flowers and is difficult to grow in a pot. Interspecific hybrids between L. longiflorum and L. callosum were rescued through in vitro separated carpels and whole ovule culture. Hybrids were identified by examining karyotype of root-tip cells, flavonoid analysis, carbohydrate analysis of stigma exudate, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging analysis of scales. All hybrids exhibited traits that could be traced back to the parents. At flowering, various characteristics were recorded, particularly the incidence of leaf scorch. The hybrids 3d-1 and Fd-1 showed some leaf scorch while most of the other hybrids and L. callosum showed severe leaf scorch. All L. callosum bulbs forced in the greenhouse did not produce bulbs for forcing in the second year. However, L. longiflorum and all the hybrids produced forcible size bulbs which flowered in the second year.
