Abstract:
Since the mid-1980s the In Gardens of Hawai'i II Project at Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum has been engaged in a research project to produce a new reference book covering the cultivated plants of Hawai'i.
The new book will identify, describe, and provide general uses and horticultural information for an estimated 2,500 species of (mainly) tropical plants.
About 500 selected species will be illustrated with line drawings or colour photographs.
The objective, primary and secondary goals, methods, results, and prognosis for this research project are described.
Emphasis has been placed on maximum information capture throughout its course.
Collateral information resources-spin-offs from the book itself-include a comprehensive checklist of all plant species known or reported to be cultivated in Hawai'i; a fully verified, documented collection of herbarium vouchers on which the research is based; a collection of colour slides of living plants; a database of bibliographic references consulted during the research; and a register of published illustrations for taxa covered in the book.
The comprehensive checklist and bibliographic database will become integral parts of the Hawaii Biological Survey, and, in their on-line forms be continuously updated.
Means are being sought to place other resources on-line as well.
