Abstract:
Though the horticulture industry world-wide is worth countless millions, its raw material, the plants raised, bought and sold are frequently wrongly named.
Evidence of this is easily found in catalogues, reference works, publicity literature, nurseries and garden centres, and surprisingly often in private collections and Botanic gardens.
The identification and nomenclature of cultivated plants has always been problematic.
This paper examines the background to the problem and critically analyses the types of reference work currently available to those wishing to improve the situation.
