ISHS Acta Horticulturae 413: II International Symposium on Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants

NAMING CULTIVARS OF PERENNIALS

Authors:   G. Simon, H. Simon
Abstract:
The International Hardy Plant Union is working for the correct naming of plants. We try to render the rules as true as possible. It is difficult to find a perfect plant list in books which are suitable for transfer to data bases. The rules of nomenclature do not help; they more often confuse. Some difficulties come up using common names. People individually try to find substitutions for their own purposes.

The parts of a botanical name are the genus and the species. No cultivar should be used without the species name. The cultivar name follows as additional third part.

With plants of hybrid origin, a hybrid group name replaces the species name in its grade, followed again by the cultivar name. In case the affiliation of the cultivar to a certain group is not reliable, a name should be chosen which indicates the unknown origin and is a true representative in the rank of the species name for this cultivar and other with the same attributes,

Our proposal still today is the word "Hybrid" which includes all information. In replacement, a symbol could be used taking the pattern from the x as part of the name of botanically described wild hybrids, like Primula x pubescens. Such a replacement could be: XX

In each case it should be assured that all cultivars attached to a list should appear under one distinguishing mark and can be found under this mark. At present they are arranged in alphabetical order among species and other groups.

Any decision must take into consideration the work with plants in data bases and in nurseries, like printing labels and lists. Nurseries often cultivate large assortments. Still more plants are found in the technical literature. Groups of genera with numerous members are often found: Iris, Hosta, Paeonia, Primula and Delphinium.
