ETHYLENE PRODUCTION DURING SWEET PEPPER FLOWERING

Abstract:
Ethylene production in sweet pepper causes a high rate of flower abscission because an imbalance between ethylene production and that of auxins is produced in the flower. Some chemicals decrease abcission caused by ethylene by inhibiting its physiological action. This work aimed to determine the ethylene production at six flower developmental stages in order to provide indications of the most effective time during the floweting period to apply those chemicals. In addition, the most appropriate volume of the vials in which pepper flowers were introduced for measuring ethylene production was also investigated; 10ml vials are recommended. Ethylene production by flowers at development stages with less than 45° petal-opening stage, ethylene to 1300 pmo1/g drwt. At the 45dec petal-opening stage, ethylene production increased some seven-fold to 9400 pmol/g drwt. Consequently, ethylene inhibitors should be most effective when they are applied to flowers at development stages with less than 45° petal opening.
