Abstract:
The response of two tomato plant cultivats (Marglobe and Carmelo) to NO3:NH4 ratios (100:0 and 80:20) and irradiance level (220 W m-2 employed as control and 300 Wm-2 +Light) was studied.
The plants were grown hydroponically in a growth chamber for 35 days.
The growth of Marglobe receiving both N forms and high light intensity was strongly reduced whereas, as the light decreased, its growth was better than with NO3 alone.
The growth of Carmelo was almost unaffected by the NO3:NH4 ratio and by the magnitude of the light supplied.
Therefore, chenges in NH4 tolerence induced by light intensity was observed between the tomato cultivars.
Marglobe appears to be NH4 sensitive at high light levels and NH4 tolerant in low light condetions.
Carmelo is insensitive to NH4 supply, whatever the amount of light supplied.
