IONIC VARIATIONS IN XYLEM STREAM OF TOMATO PLANTS IN RELATION TO TIME OF EXUDATION

Authors:   M. Guzmán, F.A. Lorente, A. Sánchez, M. Urrestarazu, M.V. Romero Gascó
Keywords:   Lycopersicon esculentum, xylem sap composition, plant decapitation method
Abstract:
10-day-old tomato plants, (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) of the F1 hybrid variety Ramy were transplanted in a NFT special system. After 24 days of growth of the experiment, concentration of anions, cations, pH and volume of water uptake were measured in exudates collected hourly during 4-hours periods after decapitation. Plants were harvested at different times during the 24-hour day period. It was shown that the values in xylem sap changed dramatically depending on the time of sap collection after decapitation. This study was conducted to gain more informatiopn about the techniques for xylem sap sampling and to investigate changes in the ionic concentrations, pH and volume of xylem sap, within the first four hours of exudation. The harvest of exudates should be taken within the first hour after decapitation. In order to obtain a representative xylem sap sample.
