Abstract:
Pepino is a solanaceus plant cultivated for its fruits which have a very long growing period and which also take 4 to 6 months to ripen. Three eperiments were conducted during 1993–94 to determine the influence of sthephon of hastening ripening when applied to marketable sized fruit still attached to the plant. In the tree experiments ethephon was applied at two concentrations: 960 ppm (D1) and 1920 ppm (D2). The cultivar utilized was the line S-22 (La Serena type), from Chile, cultivated in a greenhouse.

In all three experiments, ethephon treatments at D2 significantly (p=0.01, p=0.05) advanced the commercial ripening of pepino fruits by 1 to 3 weeks with respect to controls. D1 treatments did not improve earliness of pepino fruits. No differences between treatments were detected (°Brix) in all three experiments, nor any phytotoxicity symptom was observed in pepino plants at either the concentrating used.
