EVALUATION OF NEW TOMATO CULTIVARS ADAPTED TO MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATIC CONDITIONS |

| Abstract:
New selected tomato material was evaluated in open field and greenhouse conditions of Northern Greece. The cultivars used were: eight lines and one variety selected in ARCNG (Greece), four "Marmande" type hybrids selected in CSIC (Spain), two hybrids selected in ISO (Italy), their controls and some other commercial hybrids and varieties. Most of the lines were as early and productive as hybrids. However, the performance of some lines was negatively affected by genotype x environment interaction, since there was not any selection for multi-environmental screening done. All the "Marmande" type hybrids were classified among the earliest. Profer-3 and Experimental-F1 were high-, while Profer-2 and Profer-1 were low-yielding hybrids. The hybrid Erito was late and less productive than the best of the "Marmande" type hybrids. Echoine was of minor interest considering earliness and productivity. The commercial hybrids Arletta, Carmello, Caruso and Tresor were the earliest and the most productive. Daniela was equally productive when tested under greenhouse conditions, but was only moderately early. Carpy and Dombo were late and low-yielding hybrids. The low minimum air temperatures both in the open field during spring 1992 and in the greenhouse during the 1993 spring increased the production of malformed and small fruits in Arletta and the "Marmande" type cultivars, while the environmental stress of the open field increased blossom-end rot in some susceptible lines compared to the hybrids. | |
