ECONOMICS OF GREENHOUSE CONSTRUCTION DECISIONS FOR CULTIVATING TOMATOES

Authors:   I. Tzouramani, K. Mattas, M. Grafiadellis
Keywords:   Lycopersicon esculentum, structures, horticulture
Abstract:
Construction expenses mainly determine the profitability of a greenhouse enterprise and the competitiveness of off-seaseon tomato produce. In Greece, several greenhouse types, constructed either totally by farmers or by greenhouse construction firms, are in operation. Substantial differences in required investment funds exist among operated greenhouses, and farmers should select the most appropriate investment for their business considering several influential factors. In this work, construction expenses are recorded by greehouse type and the efficacy of greenhouse investment is explored applying the Net Present Value criterion in a tomato greenhouse enterprise. Results demonstrate the alternative investment strategies that farmers can pursuit to enhance their income returns.
