ISHS Acta Horticulturae 411: VII International Workshop on Fire Blight

EVALUATION OF FIRE BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN PEAR: COMBINING ABILITY AND BREEDING STRATEGY

Authors:   G.L. Bagnara, L. Rivalta, M. Laghi, R. Quarta
Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to estimate the combining ability of the parents used in pear breeding for fire blight resistance in order to define the best breeding strategy. The breeding value was calculated to estimate the potential of each single parent.

Standard cultivars (Stark Delicious, Bella di Giugno, Coscia and Max Red Bartlett), susceptible or low resistant, gave offsprings with good resistance. Oppositely, resistant cultivars (Morgan, Dr. Molon, Sirrine and US 309) gave very low resistant offsprings. Furthermore, fruit quality of the latter was quite poor.

In these cases, selection for resistance within the more commercially adapted breeding population may be more effective. In other words, a simultaneous selection for several traits is more efficient rather than independent selection (e.g. culling or tandem methods).
