ISHS Acta Horticulturae 411: VII International Workshop on Fire Blight

THE LATENT SURVIVAL OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA IN HIBERNATING SHOOTS

Authors:   C. Crepel, J. Geenen, M. Maes
Abstract:
The latent persistence of Erwinia amylovora in hibernating apple shoots is studied. For this, the shoots of ten apple cultivars were artificially inoculated with E. amylovora. During the growing season, shoots with typical fire blight symptoms were removed. After wintertime, symptomless hibernating shoots were evaluated for the presence of E. amylovora in plate countings and in target specific PCR. The bacteria were detected in variable concentrations in 30 per cent of the shoots. The survival of E. amylovora in hibernating shoots in the absence of disease symptoms, is a threat to the sanitary condition of the host trees and represents an important pathway for spread of the disease in the following growing season.
