ISHS Acta Horticulturae 411: VII International Workshop on Fire Blight

INVESTIGATION ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF IRANIAN ISOLATES OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA

Authors:   M.R. Afunian, H. Rahimian
Abstract:
Fire blight was first observed in Iran in 1990 (Karaj 35 km west of Tehran). Now the disease has extensively spread in the center and northwest of Iran. It makes severe damages mainly on pear, quince and apple trees. Biochemical and physiological characteristics of 50 Iranian isolates were fully examined. Also 10 isolates were investigated based on protein profile by PAGE, plasmid bands in 0.7% agarose gel, serological characteristics and sensitivity to 29 various antibiotics. Our results indicate that high homology of the isolates, so clustering them, using numerical taxonomy method, is impossible. Therefore recent infection in our countries suspected to originate from a unique source. The susceptibility of 50 pear cultivars to fire blight using artificial inoculation in greenhouse is underway.
