Abstract:
The computer model MaryblytTM was evaluated for the prediction of blossom blight in apple and pear in the southwest of Ontario.
The model predicted the occurrence of blossom blight in both cv.
Mutsu apple and cv.
Bartlett pear in the spring.
Subsequent initial shoot blight infections were also predicted by the Maryblyt™ program.
Streptomycin sprays applied during the blossom period as recommended by the model were effective in reducing blossom blight in apple and pear by 34% and 49%, respectively.
The model appears to be an effective tool in the arsenal of methods growers have available to combat fire blight.
