Abstract:
In a commercial fruit tree nursery, 400 Bartlett pear seedlings were propagated in September with budwood from 4 different sources based on the degree of fire blight infection.
Part of each budwood source was dipped in hot water (30 min. at 48°C) or in sodium hypochlorite (3 min. at 20%) or budded directly.
Ten trees (4 replications) were budded of each treatment.
By late December, one bud from an infected source, dipped in chlorox, showed typical blight symptoms in the rootstock.
When alternating buds on the sticks were plated on nutrient-yeast-dextrose agar in the laboratory, E. amylovora was recovered from one of three budsticks used in the field.
