ISHS Acta Horticulturae 411: VII International Workshop on Fire Blight

MONITORING OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA WITH POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION (PCR) IN ORCHARDS

Authors:   F. Berger, W. Zeller
Abstract:
In southwest Germany fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) has been monitored by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) since 1992 in pome fruit orchards, cider apple and perry pear trees. Monitoring was used to possibly find a relationship between the first positive results in the orchard and symptom development. Every year the pathogen could be detected at different times of blossom period: at the beginning, sometimes towards the end or even after blossom time. No relationship to weather conditions was found, but there was a correlation between positive monitoring during blossom time and later appearing symptoms. After a positive leaf monitoring almost no symptoms could be observed. So blossom monitoring can be considered as an efficient means to control the pathogen using spray treatments and to minimize applications.
