ISHS Acta Horticulturae 410: II International Cherry Symposium

NEW CONSIDERATIONS FOR CULTIVAR COMBINATIONS IN SOUR CHERRY

Authors:   Z. Orosz Kovács, F. Nyujtó, Z. Erdôs, M. Faust
Keywords:   nectar, endogenous rhythm of nectar secretion, pollination biology
Abstract:
In choosing combinations of sour cherry cultivars for orchard planting, certain characteristics should be considered. These are: (1) For new cultivars, well-adapted selections either with stigma-mimicry or with styles which curve towards the stamens should be favoured, because these characters assure better pollination. (2) Self-sterile, dichogamous cultivars should be planted with those cultivars which provide pollen at the time when the stigmas of the cultivar to be pollinated are receptive. (3) When cultivars which sometimes change their pollination strategy are to be pollinated, pollinizer cultivars should be chosen for every possible strategy involved. (4) In choosing cultivars to combine in the orchard, cultivars with similar endogenous secretion rhythms should be considered. (5) Rootstock effects on quantity and quality of floral secretion should be considered, because these secretions are a determining factor in attracting insects.
