Abstract:
Sweet cherry breeding in Yugoslavia was initiated in the early 1960s at the Fruit Research Institute, Cacak.
The goal was to develop better cultivars than the existing ones, belonging to different ripening groups.
The objectives were: higher quality of fruits with no cracking; early, heavy and regular crops; moderate vigour; compact growth habit; self-fertility.
Table cultivars with crisp, well-coloured flesh were sought, and industrial cultivars with yellow flesh and suited to mechanical harvesting.
Improved or complete resistance to pests and diseases was also important, as was hardiness to winter and late spring frosts.
To date, more than 30 cultivars in over 240 different combinations have been used in this breeding program.
A total of 4600 hybrid seedlings have been raised, 50 of which are considered promising, and only 14 as elite.
Two cultivars have been named and released: 'Asenova Rana' and 'Carna'.
