Abstract:
The seeds from 60 mature ecotypes of Prunus mahaleb were collected in 1980 and sown.
After five years one seedling per ecotype (REAL-1, REAL-2, and so on up to REAL-60) was propagated by layering and two years later the plantlets were transplanted at a spacing of 4 m x 2 m.
In February, 1988, eight propagated plants from each ecotype were used as rootstocks, grafting cv.
Bigarreau Moreau onto 4 of them, and on the other 4, the cv.
Ferrovia.
Vegetative and reproductive behaviour of the trees was evaluated from 1988 to 1991. Generally, 'Bigarreau Moreau' was less vigorous than 'Ferrovia'. Rootstocks REAL-19 and REAL-24 induced early fruit production in both cultivars.
Rootstocks REAL-27B, REAL-48 and REAL-52 reduced the vigour of both cultivars.
Several ecotypes were good rootstocks for 'Bigarreau Moreau' but not for 'Ferrovia'. In some cases, the ecotypes of Prunus mahaleb induced phenological variations such as time of leaf drop, bud break and fruit ripening.
