Abstract:
A sweet cherry breeding program at Holovousy was started in 1973. The first hybrid orchard was established in 1975, in which the first fruits were evaluated in 1976. From then until 1992, 5747 hybrids from 577 different progenies were evaluated in the fruiting stage.
In the best 10 progenies, 'Van' and 'Kordia' appeared the most frequently as one of the parents.
In total, 17 advanced selections have been included in the State Variety Trials.
Two of them were registered in 1991 as new cultivars for Czechoslovakia: 'Techlovan' and 'Vanda'. They both originated from the cross 'Van' x 'Kordia'. They are both very productive and have good fruit quality. 'Techlovan' has the biggest fruit, whereas 'Vanda' fruit is more resistant to cracking.
Seven other advanced selections are also promising for commercial fruit growing in the Czech Republic.
These selections cover nearly all of the harvest season for the species.
