Abstract:
The world's most northern location of commercial sweet cherry production is the fjord district of western Norway at a latitude of 60°N. The mild winter climate and a growing season of May through September (average temperature 13.0°C, precipitation 392 mm) makes it possible to grow many of the international sweet cherry cultivars successfully.
Through a national testing programme of sweet cherry cultivars, an assessment of new cultivars and advanced numbered selections from the leading breeding programmes of sweet cherries in Europe and America has been made continuously since 1959.
The cultivars at present recommended for commercial production are 'Frühe Meckenheimer', 'Vista', 'Kristin', 'Ulster' and 'Van' (established cultivars); 'Ranna Ljaskovska', 'Merchant', 'Sunburst' and 'Lapins' (new introductions).
