Abstract:
The general aim of the cherry breeding program is the production of compact or dwarf self-rooted varieties.
New variety introductions of sweet and sour cherries must possess inherent dwarfing and precocity, be hardy, have a good root system, be amenable to propagation and produce marketable quality fruit.
Resistance to bacterial canker (Pseudomonas spp.), brown rot (Monilia laxa), and rain-induced fruit cracking are also considered.
