Abstract:
'Schattenmorelle' cherry was budded on F 12/1 rootstocks in the nursery at two different heights: 10–15 cm and 25–30 cm.
As a result of fluctuating temperatures received late in the following winter, many trees were injured, particularly the high-budded trees.
High budding resulted in more vigorous growth of 'Schattenmorelle' scion in the nursery and orchard.
Yield of high-budded trees was also slightly higher, but the increase of yield was likely a function of increased tree size.
High budding on F 12/1 is not recommended for sour cherry since it creates a greater risk of winter damage to the rootstock and produces excessively vigorous trees.
Deep planting forced removal of lower lateral shoots at planting and this resulted in reduction of growth and yield.
Therefore, deep planting must not be recommended as a measure to prevent winter damage to high-budded rootstock.
