Abstract:
Based on the analysis of 400–1000 flowers per cultivar, we established that flowering in sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) can be characterized by the flowering index (Index-V) elaborated by Máthé (1977). Our observations have revealed the same basic pattern of development as described for other horticultural crops such as apple, apricot, peach, sour cherry, and plum.
Exact numerical expression of both the entire course of flowering and the period of 'mass-flowering' or 'full bloom' is therefore possible.
The index values offer a handy tool for comparing cultivars, thus facilitating selection of the best pollinating cultivars.
