Abstract:
The ECP/GR Prunus Working Group in late 1992 proposed the establishment of a computerized database to record genetic information on cherries.
We have set up a database using dBase IV to record the allelic constitutions of cherry cultivars, so far of P. avium, for various loci, and have entered data from published and unpublished sources for incompatibility, albinism and juice colour and for 44 isoenzyme loci.
An example is given of the data recorded for 10 cultivars.
The database will be revised in the light of information received at or after this symposium and a printed version, a cherry gene catalogue, should be available in winter 1993/1994. Cherry breeders publishing genetic information, especially on isoenzymes, are urged to check for homologies with previously established loci and alleles to minimise confusion.
Similar databases could be useful for other fruit crops.
