Abstract:
Since the 16th and 17th centuries, large regions and smaller localities devoted to sour cherry growing have developed in the environs of towns like Debrecen, Újfehértó, Nyíregyháza and Mátészalka in northeastern Hungary.
The work of sour cherry variety selection (initiated by the Research Station of Újfehértó) was carried out with the aim of finding types (subsequently clones) possessing self-fertility, high productivity and fruit quality.
Also needed were varieties with different times of harvest, and which had fruits which detached leaving dry abscission layers.
Amongst the many clones propagated from selected types two, both considered as new cultivars, have been accepted and introduced by the state: these are 'Újfehértói fürtös' and 'Debreceni botermo'. Another selection, 'Kántorjánosi meggy' is also recommended by the state for propagation.
