VASCULAR BLOCKAGE AND ITS INHIBITION IN CUT ROSE FLOWERS

Abstract:
The effects of ion exchange resins on vascular blockage were studied in cut roses by measuring blockage ratesin excised stem segments and by determining water uptake and fresh weight retention in ageing cut roses. Ion exchange resins inhibited blockage in excised stem segments only by virtue of their physical properties, whereas specific removal of anions was a requirement for enhancement of water uptake and fresh weight retention in whole cut roses. Water uptake and retention of fresh weight were significantly increased by the ion exchange column treatment, and symptoms of early wilting known as "bent neck" were prevented. Blockage in excised stem segments was not found to be representative of loss of conductivity in whole cut flowers.
