ISHS Acta Horticulturae 409: IV International Symposium on Growing Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and in the Subtropics

INDUCTION OF BUDBREAK IN APPLE TREES THAT RECEIVED INSUFFICIENT CHILLING BY HYDROGEN CYANAMIDE

Author:   S. Subhadrabandhu
Abstract:
Hydrogen cyanamide promoted budbreak at 1% and higher concentrations in 'Anna' apples. Higher percentages of budbreak were found at higher concentrations. However, many shoots died at 10%. Budbreak was found in all parts of shoots when treated with 1 to 5 % hydrogen cyanamide, whereas almost all burst buds were restricted to the upper parts of shoots in the untreated trees. Elongation of new shoots from burst buds in the middle and lower parts of shoots, grew better in trees that were treated with hydrogen cyanamide at 2.5 and 5 %. The results indicate that hydrogen cyanamide promoted dormancy breaking in 'Anna' apple trees.
