PREFACE

Author:   Assem D. Shaltout
Abstract:
The Fourth International Symposium on Growing Temperate Zone Fruits in Tropics and Subtropics 'TZFTS' was organized at the Egyptian International Center for Agriculture of Cairo, Egypt, during 22–26 of May, 1993. The Symposium was attended by 250 participants from Egypt and different countries of the world i.e. Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Pakistan, Libya, Netherlands, Thailand, India, Paraguay, South Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Chile and the United States of America. The proceedings of the symposium reflect the issues under discussion during 40 oral and 8 poster presentations. Main issues were dormancy, plant nutrition, growth regulators, cultural practices, post harvest and marketing as well as propagation aspects.

Several excursions were organized to visit sites of fruit tree production in the desert areas and tissue culture labs and nurseries at Cairo University. Also sightseeing was part of the programme, e.g. sound and light show, pyramids and Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The deputy prime minister and minister of Agriculture and land reclamation, Professor Yossef Walli attended the opening session and held an excellent meeting at his office with the foreign participants.

Thanks are due to all sponsors including Ministry of Agriculture, Egyptian Society for Horticultural Science, Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB).

Thanks also to Dr. Alan P. George, Australia, Chairman of the working group for his support before, during and after the symposium. Thanks are also due to Dr. G. R. Stino, Egypt and Alan P. George for helping editing the manuscripts.

At the end of the Symposium it was announced that Dr. Alan P. George resigned as chairman of the working group and that Dr. Assem D. Shaltout, Egypt, and the convenor of this symposium was elected as the new chairman of the working group.

The group decided that the next meeting will be held in three years time in Australia or in Turkey.

I would like to wish the convenors and their team all the best in organizing the future meetings.

Assem D. Shaltout
