ISHS Acta Horticulturae 408: International Seminar on Soilless Culture Technology Protected Crops Mild Winter Climates

EFFECTS OF SUBSTRATE WARMING IN SOILLESS CULTURE ON GERBERA CROP PERFORMANCE UNDER SEASONAL VARIATIONS

Authors:   P.F. Martinez, Y.M.M. Abdel Fattah
Keywords:   plant water relations, transpiration rate, water potential, perlite, attapulgite
Abstract:
This paper aims at contributing to a more efficient use of substrate warming. This work deals with the effects on crop behaviour, with particular attention to the effects on water consumption in two substrates, perlite and attapulgite. The results show no remarkable changes in the stability of either material after the second year use. The differences in their physical properties are discussed, as well as the consequences on the management of the culture. Heating the substrates increases water consumption by plants. This effect has been observed to continue after the heating season is finished. Seasonal adaptation of the plants is analysed in terms of transpiration, stomatal conductance and leaf water Potential variations.
