ISHS Acta Horticulturae 407: ISHS Brassica Symposium - IX Crucifer Genetics Workshop

RESISTANCE IN WILD BRASSICAS TO THE CABBAGE WHITEFLY, ALEYRODES PROLETELLA.

Authors:   A.D. Ramsey, P.R. Ellis
Abstract:
The cabbage whitefly, Aleyrodes proletella, is a pest of brassicas in lowland Britain. A laboratory technique for screening brassicas for resistance to A. proletella was developed and seventeen accessions of wild Brassica germplasm were assessed. Whilst three B. oleracea accessions were susceptible to A. proletella, accessions of several species within the B. oleracea cytodeme offered some level of resistance. Accessions of two species from an n=8 cytodeme offered almost complete immunity to the pest. Wherever possible tests were repeated on promising material and the resistance confirmed in field experiments. Crosses between some resistant and susceptible plants were made but the F1 generations showed no significant levels of resistance.
