ISHS Acta Horticulturae 407: ISHS Brassica Symposium - IX Crucifer Genetics Workshop

PRODUCTION OF ALLOPLASMIC CHINESE CABBAGE USING SYNTHESIZED TRIGENOMIC HEXAPLOID (AABBCC) IN BRASSICA

Authors:   T. Takeda, Y. Takahata
Abstract:
An artificially synthesized trigenomic hexaploid (genome AABBCC) was used to produce alloplasmic Chinese cabbage. The seed fertilities of crosses between a trigenomic hexaploid, CaC-334 line (amphidiploid of B. carinata x B. campestris) and 3 cultivars of B. campestris are 0.43 – 0.1 per pollination. F1 plants were successively backcrossed to Chinese cabbage. Though morphology of the progenies became close to Chinese cabbage, the seed fertility was not increased. The high fertility (6.9 seeds per pollination) was obtained in the sib-crosses on BC5 generation, and its progeny (BC5S1) produced higher seed fertility (8.4). Cytological observation demonstrated that BC5S1 plants are alloplasmic Chinese cabbage having B. carinata cytoplasm.
