Abstract:
A male sterile (ms) Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris) was studied on the mode of inheritance and its morphology.
Morphology of a ms plant did not look different from that of a normal one, except for the small petals and stamens.
Results of hybridizations between ms plants and 4 cultivars of B. campestris indicated that the ms is controlled by a single recessive gene.
A light microscopic observation revealed that tapetum of ms plants became vacuolar, swelled into anther cavity and crushed microspores after microspores were released.
