MODELLING CLIMATIC EFFECTS ON QUALITY LOSSES OF PERISHABLE HORTICULTURAL PRODUCE IN POSTHARVEST PERIOD

Authors:   M. Linke, M. Schreiner, M. Geyer
Abstract:
To maintain quality of perishable horticultural produce (for example lettuce) in postharvest, an information model is developed as the basis for decisions on the configuration of single process phases during the postharvest period. One important component of the information model is the description of the mass transfer mechanisms including all climatic effects on the produce. Emphasis is placed on one of the functional correlations of the model - the correlation between climatic effects and produce responses. Climatic effects expressed as the average difference in water content between the leaf and the ambient air are determined via the total resistance in the water vapour pathway (produce variable) and transpiration (produce response). This relation is used as an indicator for quality changes in lettuce.
