Abstract:
Carbohydrate content of two rose varieties (‘Sonia’ and ‘Madelon’) which differ in flowerbud opening characteristics, have been measured during vase life.
At the start of the experiment leaves (sources) or corolla (sink) were removed, or stems were left intact.
Carbohydrate content of the corolla was lower when leaves were removed, and carbohydrate content of leaves were higher when the corolla had been removed.
The good opening variety probably was more able to import carbohydrates from the leaves and the stem than the bad opening variety.
Besides being the source for the flowerbud, the leaves also play a role in translocating sugars from the vase solution into the flowerbud.
