ISHS Acta Horticulturae 405: VI International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamental Plants

POST HARVEST TREATMENTS AND REFRIGERATED STORAGE STUDIES ON DRACAENA MARGINATA

Authors:   R.S. Wilson Wijeratnam, D. Sivakumar, M. Abeyesekere
Abstract:
Dracaena marginata is a popular export commodity. Exporters experience that leaf fall, leading to considerable losses, is a problem when this plant is subjected to the extended period of cold and dark storage associated with sea shipment.

Studies revealed that leaf fall is associated with plant size or age. Plants 80–90 cm high could be suitably acclimatized for shipment overseas under dark cold storage at 16°C and 85–90 % relativ humidity. Wax treatments significantly reduced leaf yellowing and defoliation and preserved quality and colour. Kinetin applied in a concentration of 10 ppm to plants 85–100 cm high was more effective in maintaining quality and reducing yellowing and defoliation than gibberellin applied at the same concentration. A combination of 10 ppm kinetin and wax was found to be an effective treatment for retaining overall quality during prolonged storage.
