INFLUENCE OF CHEMICALS ON VASE LIFE OF GLADIOLUS

Authors:   N. Roychowdhury, S. Sarkar
Abstract:
In a study on the effect of adding different chemicals (MgsO4, ZnSO4, FeSO4, AgNO3, NiCl2, CoCl2 and Al2(SO4)3, each at either 500 or 1000 ppm, and sucrose at either 2 or 4 %) to the vase waster for gladiolus, the longest spike longevity was obtained with 500 ppm NiCl2 at 1000 ppm. NiCL2 also gave maximum longevity and maximum period of prime beauty for the individual flowers while it delayed flower opening. The other treatments also gave results superior to that of control (pure water). In general, treatments with FeSO4 and AgNO3 hastened flower opening, but the longevity of the spikes was increased compared to control. The results suggest the use of NiCl2 at 500 ppm as a vase solution for preserving quality and to increase longevity of gladiolus spikes.
