DISTRIBUTION OF SUGARS IN TULIP FLOWER PARTS AS AFFECTED BY ETHREL AND GA3 IN THE HOLDING SOLUTION

Author:   A. J. Lukaszewska
Abstract:
The preservative 200 ppm 8HQC + 4% sucrose did not affect longevity of cut tulips cv. Apeldoorn, but resulted in a substantial growth of pistil, especially if GA3 was applied in the holding solution. Ethephon reduced stem elongation, pistil growth and petal length.

Joint application of ethephon and GA3, combined with the preservative, improved quality of cut tulips.

Content of total soluble and reducing sugars fell in all parts, both tepals, pistils, shoot and leaves, of control flowers during 6 days of vase life.

Exogenous sucrose was mainly translocated to stem and leaf. Tepals were the least metabolically active and their reducing sugar content decreased even when tulips were held in preservative. On dry matter basis, ethephon, more than GA3, promoted accumulation of sugars in tepals and pistils. However, the absolute soluble sugar content was highest in the pistils of the GA3-fed flowers.
