CHARACTERISTICS OF ETHYLENE PRODUCTION OF DENDROBIUM ORCHID FLOWERS

Abstract:
Intact flower buds of Dendrobium Caesar 2N, Dendrobium Pompadour, Dendrobium Sabin, Dendrobium Sonia Bom #28, Dendrobium Walter Oumae Taba 2N and Dendrobium Walter Oumae Taba 4N produced higher levels of ethylene than intact open florets. Similarly, ethylene production and 1-aminocyclo-propane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content of isolated flower buds were higher than that of isolated open florets. The ability of ACC conversion to ethylene in isolated flower buds, half open and open florets was comparable. Isolated open florets held in solutions containing ethylene inhibitors (aminooxyacetic acid, CoCl2 and AgNO3) at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mM showed that their ethylene production was not reduced, while their vase life was shortened. The vase life of open florets was significantly increased when they were held in the solution containing 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) + glucose and even more effective when aminooxy-acetic acid (AOA) was included together with HQS + glucose but the ethylene production was not reduced as compared to those held in distilled water.
