Abstract:
Ultrastructure of cells from ligulae of cut Gerbera inflorescences (cv.
Red Marleen) was studied after 8 days of vase life in distilled water or preservative solution (2.5 % sucrose + 150 ppm 8-HQS +200 ppm KCl), compared to fresh inflorescences.
Cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in preservative solution maintained their ultrastructure adequately compared to that of fresh inflorescences.
Cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in distilled water had a low cytoplasm content, small mitochondria and elongated chromoplasts.
Dead cells with plasmolysed and completely degraded content were also identified.
It was concluded that ultrastructure of cells from ligulae of inflorescences held in distilled water, after 8 days of vase life was in a very advanced phase of degradation in spite of the fact that the external symptoms had not occured.
