| Abstract:
The postharvest quality of miniature pot roses is limited by bud abscission and 12premature flower senescence. We have investigated a number of treatments for the purpose of prolonging the decorative life of Rosa hybrida L. 'Victory Parade' and 'Elegance Parade'. Among these were silver thiosulfate (STS), aminooxyacetic acid (AOA), polyamines (PAs) and benzyladenine (BA). The miniature roses were treated with ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) to study their sensivity to ethylene, and with silver thiosulfate to investigate its inhibitory effects on ethylene action. Bud abscission and flower senescence were accelerated by spraying plants with ethephon, and the longevity of individual flowers and whole plants was reduced. All STS concentrations (0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 mM) improved postharvest keeping quality. Bud abscission and flower senescence were decreased, and the longevity both of flowers and of whole plants was improved by STS application. Benzyladenine treatment was almost as satisfactory as STS treatment for postharvest characteristics of miniature roses. The highest concentration of BA (0.8 mM) we used in the experiment was the best, and we can conclude that a higher concentration than 0.8 mM may therefore give additional improvement of the measured parameters. AOA-treated plants lasted slightly longer than control plants, but the effect was not as satisfactory as with BA or STS. Spraying the plants with various polyamine concentrations (spermine, spermidine, or putrescine) or the PA-synthesis inhibitor methylglyoxal-guanylhydrazone (MGBG) did not have any effect on postharvest life of miniature roses. | |
