THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FRUIT SET AND STAGE OF BUD EMASCULATION IN GERANIUM

Authors:   C. Yanfang, L. Lixin
Abstract:
Geranium is widely cultivated as pot and bed plants in China. The effect of emasculation at different size of flower buds on the fruit set was investigated in Geranium (Pelargonium zonala Ait) the result showered that the percentage of fruit set was about 60% when the flower bud is 12–15 mm long at emasculation, but reduced to 20% when the flower bud is 10mm long at emasculation. The plants which can set 60% fruits produced 60–70% seeds of full development. The fruit set of Geranium is affected by temperature and the favourable pollination should be carried out from late April to early June in Beijing under the greenhouse.

Geranium is widely planted in our country. It is suitable for garden growing, and is often used as bed plants in Beijing. Geranium are usually propagated vegetatively, but hybridization was also needed to raise new cultivar, or obtain F1 seeds. The main purpose of our trial is to discover the relationship between fruit set and the stage of bud emasculation in Geranium
