YELLOW BUTTERFLY A NEW CLIMBING ROSE

Authors:   L. Lixin, C. Yanfang
Abstract:
This new climbing rose derives from Floribunda Rose 'club' x Rosa canina using mass pollens of both parents (1/3 paternal pollen 2/3 maternal pollen) Hybridizing in 1987, we obtained this new cultivar in 1988. This new rose has vigorous canopy and tolerance to frost. Early flowering with yellow large flowers in spring, and also blooming in summer, this new cultivar is suitable for garden growing.

Some new rose had been bred in recent years, as for garden growing and for cut flower, but they didn't match the demands of the city, so the more new cultivars are needed. Rose usually begin to bloom in mid May in Beijing. Although Floribunda Rose bloom early than the others, it is important to breed new cultivars which bloom earlier than Floribunda Rose. According to our experience, it was difficult to obtain early flowering rose by crossing usual cultivars. So we planed to use interspecies hybridization, that is to select new cultivars from the offsprings of interspecies hybridization.
