STUDIES ON CARNATION (DIANTHUS CARYOPHYLLUS) SPECIES HYBRIDIZATION

Authors:   W. Guobao, Y. Jingping, Z. xiaomei, F. Gongcheng, L. Dawei, Y. Zhen
Abstract:
This paper reports the relevant aspects of carnation species hybridization; Combining the repeated pollination with the embryo culture, we overcame the incompability of species hybridization and obtained species hybrids of the hybridized combinations-D. caryophyllus D. chinensis, D. caryophyllus X D. barbatus. Through 3–4 generation back crosses we obtained 30 new varieties with some characters derived from D. chinensis or D. barbatus and 130 promising hybrid forms which may be used as parent materials. A male sterile e single plant was found from the F1 species hybrids of the combination- D. caryophyllus X D. chinensis. It has been propagate ed as a strain which can be used as pot strain has been developed. The shortest age among the embryos cultured into plantlets is 18 days, key words; father plant, maternal plant, species hybrids, male sterility, carnation.
