EVALUATION ON THE RESISTANCE TO COLD AND CULTIVATION ZONATION IN CHRYSANTHEMUM VARIETIES

Author:   Y. Caimei
Keywords:   Chrysanthemum, free proline content, electrolyte exudation rate, cold resistance
Abstract:
For the first time in flower industry of China the authors made the evaluation on the resistance to cold in four chrysanthemum varieties through determination of free proline content and electrolyte exudation rate of tissues. The sequence of the resistance (in descending order) determined by free proline content is phoenix Tail, France Red, Yellow Giant and June snow, and the same sequence is achieved by mating logistic equation to the electrolyte exudation rate curve and making use of the temperature of turned points, calculated semilethal temperatures being -27.18, -25.34, -23.19 and - 18.19°C respectively. The result achieved by above-mentioned two methods is proved true by the behaviour of the four varieties during outdoor wintering if shenyang area of China, therefore it is considered reliable to chose these two physiological indexes to evaluate the cold resistance of chrysanthemum varieties. These two methods made it possible to introduce aimed varieties, to select cold-resistant varieties and to forecast geographical limits in cultivation of various chrysanthemum varieties.
