ISHS Acta Horticulturae 404: International Symposium on Cultivar Improvement of Horticultural Crops. Part 3: Flowers

DEVELOPMENT OF NEW VARIETIES WITH SMALL INFLORESCENCES IN CHRYSANTHEMUM

Authors:   X. Chen, H. Li
Keywords:   chrysanthemum breeding, small inflorescences, interspecific hybridization
Abstract:
By crossing local wild chrysanthemum, 'Juhuanao' (2n-2x-18) and 'Nanjing Yeju' (2n=4x=36) with domesticated hexaploid chrysanthemum, and Chinese autumn chrysanthemum with Netherlands chrysanthemum floweriing in summer and autumn, a series of new varieties with small inflorescences were developed. These new varieties characterized by beautiful and fragrant flowers, are tolerant to high temperature and humidity in summer. 'Juhuanao' and 'Nanjing Yeju' are potential parential parents in chrysanthemum breeding for small inflorescences.

Chrysanthemum originated in China, having been cultured for thousands years. There are many communities of wild chrysanthemum in the Yellow River Valley and Yangtz Valley raising many varieties in the course of natural and atrificial selection (Chen and Wang, 1979). Chrysanthemum is maingly considered to be ornamental flower, but some of them are of high medicinal or edible value. There are many diploid (2n=2x=18) or tetraploid (2n=4x=36) wild species and primary species in China (Li et al., 1983; Chen et al., 1990). Cultural vareties are mainly hexaploids or their anueploids. Varieties with oddpoids or aneuploids can be reproduced and lots of bud variations and somatic variations can be maintained because of its vegetativeness.
