Abstract:
Hawthorn (Genus Crataegus) comprises about 1000 species, distributed in the north temperate zone, mainly in North America, where if is mostly used for ornamentation and much work has been done in the fields of taxonomy, cytology and palynology.
There are 17 species in China, cultivated in all provinces, and among them Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. is more common in the North of China, becoming the endemic fruit tree in our country and rich in variety resources; the fruits of this species can be consumed raw or processed as preserves, jam, as well as beverage and for medical uses.
With the increasing development of the economy in our country, the research on hawthorn has been increasing in recent years, but there have been few studies concerned with an overall and systematic identification and evaluation of hawthorn resources in our country.
Aiming at further exploiting and making use of hawthorn resources in our country and promoting international exchanges, the authors carried out the research concerned with the identification and evaluation of hawthorn resource characters and screening of superior germplasm in our country from 1986 to 1990: data obtained from identification and evaluation had been identified and screened out which provided superior germplasm for the modernization of breeding and would play an important role in the development of hawthorn production in our country.
